What is undercurrent?
undercurrent is a pursuit of listening—a call-and-response between the Earth, the body and the sonic soundscape that summons our innermost expression.
Inspired by the free-flowing form of lakes, oceans and rivers, Chan Lin takes an improvisational approach to slab-building—creating unique, experimental form factors and designs. Each piece is one of a kind. Rather than creating stagnant objects, Chan Lin breathes life into her ceramics, etching landscapes and coastlines with materials from the earth, and molding them into planters: life vessels that foster care, love and growth.
Therefore, in partnership with Ji Hae Byun, founder of the plant design service, LIVIN, undercurrent sets out to inspire all of us to listen to the wonders of nature, in order to foster our own growth and expression.
What was the Potting Workshop?
Each purchase of a ceramic planter came with an invitation to a potting workshop taking place on the last day of the exhibit. In this hour-long workshop, founder of LIVIN, Ji Hae Byun, helped bring life to each planter by:
Potting your planter with a new plant friend (plant is included)
Learning how to care for and nurture your plant
Getting your hands dirty and having fun
The Planters!
Chan’s original planter design is optimized for the following question: What is the least amount of clay for the most amount of soil on a narrow windowsill? Playing with both subtractive and additive features, each planter features side drainage to allow for both bottom and top watering.
About the Artist

Chan Lin is an immigrant Chinese-American queer artist in Queens. Her small batch hand crafted ceramics are her re-imaginations of identity, heritage, landscapes, and form.. She loves making functional art, designing graphics, riding her bike, and always always supporting other AAPI artists.
About LIVIN’s Ji Hae Byun
Ji Hae is a queer, Korean-American human and founder of LIVIN, a plant design and care company. As someone who started her career in the corporate world, jaded by a system that doesn’t serve everyone, LIVIN was born to serve local communities in NYC through the power of plants. By creating plant-filled spaces for small businesses, her goal is to create access to nature and reimagine building a business grounded in wild curiosity and deep compassion. Currently, the LIVIN plant nerds are breathing life into local businesses and restaurants in order to help bring people back together, safely.
